The novels in this class take place in a variety of cultures and times, from the newly settled Mississippi Valley of the 19th century to the 16th century Republic of Venice. Like all classic literature, each of these works addresses universal themes of the human experience; at the same time, each explores a unique time and place, and the demands that specific culture places on the characters. This course is designed for 9th and 10th graders, and aligns to Common Core standards.
Readings include: 12 Years a Slave, Nectar in a Sieve, The Count of Monte Cristo, Othello, Frankenstein, The Joy Luck Club, Guests of the Sheik, and Reading Like A Writer.
