Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. What is wanting, said Napoleon, that the youth of France be well educated? Mothers! replied Madame Campan. This reply struck the Emperor. Here, said he, is a system of education in one word. Be it your care to train up mothers who shall know how to educate their children.
With this sentiment, the lamented author of the following pages most heartily agreed. Believing it, and determining to do his part in giving a right bent to those who are shaping others, he made the Life and Mission of Woman a matter of patient and profound investigation; and the result of this investigation we have before us. Few men, it is confidently affirmed, have penetrated deeper into the very heart of this great subject; and a more comprehensive, able and practical discussion of the subject will not be found.
A chief excellence of this treatise is its scripturalness. Dr. Monod interrogated the Bible as to the question of Woman's proper Mission and Life; and he found its light, here as elsewhere, clear and sufficient.
