Why China Will Not Democratize analyzes Chinese politics through three perspectives: domestic policy, structural reform and external pressure. Under this framework, the author shows that China under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been moving in a direction contrary to the international community's expectations.Developing this idea, the author sheds light on the reason China will not democratize by providing a substantial framework for understanding Chinese politics under Xi Jinping. Yoshikazu Kato examines how the CCP has assured its own legitimacy by balancing the tools of political stability, economic growth, social justice and human rights since its foundation.Containing multiple interviews and conversations with Chinese high officials including the former head of Chongqing, Bo Xilai, Why China Will Not Democratize concludes that the major players in international politics are disrupting political reform and democratization in China. The current turbulence surrounding Hong Kong is our most contemporary symbolic and critical case; a historic lesson on which the rest of the world should seriously and collectively reflect.
