Emily Boson - known to all as 'Higsy' - comes across an ad for a crew member on an 80 ft wooden 'research vessel' that will need several months of refurbishing before sailing off to the Caribbean. While Higsy knows nothing at all about boats, she does have high-end skills working with and finishing wood. Her theory is that if she can renovate a bookcase, she can renovate a boat. Hoping the owner will agree, Higsy throws her considerable enthusiasm behind her bid for the job. She ends up speaking with the owner - who she knows only as 'Con' - once a week over several months while he seems in no hurry to make the decision on who to hire. Just as she is about to give up, he asks her to come to Marina del Rey in California to join him and some friends for a weekend cruise to see if the job suits her. It is then she discovers that 'Con' is Hank Conrad, the very famous inventor, entrepreneur, and extraordinary genius.
Higsy accepts the job and finds everything about the situation delightful, even though she begins to notice that something is going on beyond just renovating a wonderful old wooden vessel. Are the currents that ripple just under the surface full of distress, or adventure? Is Hank Conrad hiding a new invention that would revolutionize the world, or isn't he? Are giant corporations and various world governments really vying to get their hands on this device that may or may not exist? And does the possibility of romance add joy or danger?
Will Higsy sort it all out? Of course! Easy peasy - well, most of the time...
