In 1946 a young woman from the South by the name of February Spark - orphaned by an American Navy captain at the end of the war accused of espionage for Japanese, moves northward to the small town Modesty, neighboring Boston to begin job as a secretary assistant at the 'Daily Eye' title.

The main female character has to exorcise demons from her past, determined to cleanse the name of her father from ignominy, while at the same time becoming involved in a simultaneous relation with two males - the handsome, intriguing owner of the gazette and the for-so-long unseen friend from childhood, once she accidentally meets on the street of Modesty- a young veteran from the Spanish civil war. Soon after her arrival February becomes experienced firstly with the disappearance, and finally with the murder of her roommate, Rosalie Bell - according to the latter herself, a descendant of 'white Russians.'

The past, gradually, discovered in the memories of main both, protagonists and antagonists (however both terms are given a trial as the story progresses) provides more question marks than answers.
