When is a person considered old? And what does it mean for individuals and society to be among the old? People in Europe are getting older, often in good health. Nevertheless, there is no such thing as the elderly, because studies have repeatedly shown a high degree of variability in physical, psychological, social and cognitive factors. New images of age - the sporty, fashionable, enthusiastic to travel, culturally interested, enjoying life, volunteering and self-determined people over 65 years of age - are increasing. But old age also has its dark sides - poverty, illnesses, the death of loved ones, loneliness, uncertainty about the future, old age depression and suffering from the passing of time (Claudia Bozzaro). The authors of this special issue show a multi-layered picture with numerous perspectives on age - also in the performing arts from 1200 to modern times. There is cause for reflection, exchange and action.
