Beskrivelse
An epic story spread between the 30's and the early 60's of the previous century, in flashbacks shifting back to the beginning of the 20th century, mostly focused in Germany undergoing probably one of the most disgraceful periods in history- national socialism.
Summer of '42, fearless soldiers of Wehrmacht successfully conquering half of the world,
a sleepy Sudetic town, bucolic in landscape and atmosphere, the place of recovery for
German officers injured at fronts where young nurse Hilda and her junior sister, overly mature, sensually beautiful Else take care of the heroes.
It could have been a story of one summer romance where already burnt with both, war experience (including one particularly recurring and traumatizing) and his so far relations with females, officer Sommerheim, somewhat against his will engaged or rather pulled into the vortex of history, perhaps induced with curiosity, perhaps with urge to forget begins his controversially carnal affair with an only 17-year-old girl.
The careless relation which changed so much and forever in their lives for Wolfgang practically dedicating the rest of his existence to pursue Else, having to wander distant lands and continents to find the woman and only to realize she is not for keeps.
The pursuing seems the theme of the story as both of the former lovers struggle to catch what's the most vital to them to realize the impossibility of their efforts.
Whether Else Hochweiler finds peace in the arms of her One - the ideal of the man she had long time ago before Wolfgang dreamt of?
If Wolfgang's life is leaking through his fingers, without him realizing how much he's hurting his close ones, is only the result of his loss, or maybe the times in which both of them had to live preordained them to be deprived?
