Ever since the rebellion, five families have ruled over Ilfrera: House Ramnarine, House Psyny, House Whitehorn, House Lyell, and House Dasari. That is, until, House Whitehorn is massacred in the middle of the night, reducing the five families to four. While the Houses seek to discover who committed such a heinous crime, Iain Whitehorn returns to the continent, prepared to be knighted, only to find his family murdered and himself as the sole survivor of the Whitehorn massacre.
