Beskrivelse
This fascinating book brings together the memories of people who have lived and worked in the market town of Petersfield and surrounding villages, including Buriton, Liss, Stroud, Sheet, Steep, Harting and Longmoor during the last century. Recollections begin at the turn of the twentieth century from those who worked below stairs, and, through the eyes of descendants and friends, we peep into the lives of the Lords of the Manor. In stark contrast to those seemingly idyllic days, the memoir of a ‘Dickensian’ rubber factory in the 1950s is poignant. The Petersfield market is described by the longest serving stallholder and by a gentleman who earned pocket money holding the flares that lit the stalls; others remember bulls escaping down the High Street! This intriguing volume is illustrated by over 110 photographs drawn from various private collections and is an important contribution to the local history of this area of Hampshire.
