Villains Heroes & Comrades spans a volatile period from 1982 until the turn of the last century where a small group of reluctant working-class heroes who dwelled in a shabby waterfront enclave engaged industry and State governments of both persuasions in a bitter and divisive struggle for survival. With the support of the trade union movement and like-minded sympathisers, these unassuming fledglings indelibly etched themselves into local folklore. In unflattering terms regularly mentioned in parliament, able to create bold headlines and cause boardrooms to cringe. Those who took a major part sought no recognition and today are mostly forgotten, a lot older and probably wiser, some passed on. Those who take their surroundings for granted should pause a moment to reflect if a few had not risen up and demanded better how different their environment would be. Acknowledge the role the trade union movement today struggling for its own survival played in saving an old grubby waterfront suburb for those who called it home no matter how degraded and humble.
