Urban design is the art of creating spaces which are public in nature and intended to be used by all. Derived from the idea of civic design at city level presently urban design is considered as most recognized way to deal with urban complexities. This book contains study of few case examples of urban settlements in hill towns and opens a new perspective for urban designers working in these regions. Urban design exploration in such area starts with the basic understanding of topographical, geographical, climatic, cultural and economic conditions. Urban hill settlements are recognized by their picturesque beauty, vegetation, clean climate and serene environment. The inherent livable qualities have contributed in making such urban settings as preferred destination for peaceful living and leisure tourism. Urban design interventions in Indian hill towns are very limited. This is due lack of awareness and availability of experts in the field. This book is an attempt to set basic methodology for study and analysis so as to derive context based urban design agendas. Study and analysis of existing city structures and urban form in the Hill towns to achieve sustainable development needs an urban design perspective. Such explorations will help in developing urban design guidelines for future development.
