Unknown Enemy

An alien ship lands on present day earth and offers advanced technology in return for earth's alliance in a 400-year-old war against an aggressive alien species. Within a few decades, earth develops into an interstellar civilisation and sends its first interstellar ship, the Nelson, on its first combat mission. The ship returns to earth after its mission to find that 120 years on earth have gone by and is led by a corrupt president and his family with the support of an unscrupulous oligarchy.
