Keoni, a Roroa Kiwi whose life is threatened when his mother passes to the spirit world after delivering his egg and his father abandons both the egg and his community, leaving it without a leader. Keoni has a special ability - to see events in the future. Also meet Emily in Victorian England whose life of privilege is forced to end and becomes a nanny's assistant at the local manor. One Hundred years later, meet Keoni's grandson, Keanu who is forced to move from their burrow at Punakaiki when humans build over it. They move to an old family at Lake Kaniere. There they have a son, Kupe who becomes the next leader of the Kingdom. He sets out on a quest for the descendants of Keoni's supporters to restore the kingdom, knowing that he is being followed by those who wish to destroy both him and his kingdom.
The Kingdom comes under threat again when a young kiwi from the past comes to the kingdom, intent on revenge. Also meet Emily's granddaughter Amy who is unhappy with her life where there is little time for her and her husband to be together.
