UFOs

"Flying at an altitude of a mile and moving at great speed, two strange airships were sighted by observers today. They were torpedo shaped. Army and Navy officials refuse comment.

"When the flying machine - if flying machine it was - had passed a little ways over our heads it became of a bright silver color, something like a star and seemed to grow brighter all the time. It shone so bright in a short time that it was a strain on her eyes to keep it in view. The machine must have been about 3 miles high in the air and was not plainly visible so I decided to go in the house again and look for the field glasses".

Bigfoot

"Our correspondent describes the wild man as being about six feet, five inches tall, with broad shoulders and long apish arms; smooth face and funnel shaped head. His body is covered with dark brown hair, near two inches long. His head and a great portion of his forehead is covered with long, luxuriant, dark red tresses. Our correspondent affirms that this is the first time this wild man has ever been seen or heard of in the neighborhood."

"There is a wild man roaming about who is of giant size and as hairy as a Newfoundland dog and as well as he can guess, about 9 feet high and will weigh near 500 pounds - his eyes giving light equal to the moon - and appearance of the most frightful nature and growls equal to the lion, causing the people in that section to remain home of nights with close doors and well fastened."

Ghosts

The scene of the spectral visitation is at High bridge, which crosses the Nashua River between Clinton and Bolton. For over a week past every train passing during the night has been halted at the approach of the bridge by a bright light, which appeared about 3 feet above the ties in the center of the bridge, and which would be swung to and fro across the tracks as a signal to stop. Upon the approach of either the train or an individual, the light would suddenly disappear when the intruder got within 10 feet of it. It shed a bright glare all around as a light of an ordinary lamp would, but there was no lantern about it, nor did a human hand hold it.

Most of the stories were written during the 1800s and early 1900s. I intentionally chose stories from before the invention of the radio and TV, when the only methods of receiving NEWS were from newspapers and word of mouth. Unlike today, the public was not pre-conditioned by television, radio, magazines, and books on these subjects. At the time, a flying object was considered ridiculous. Yet, there were thousands of credible witnesses.
