Beskrivelse
Inquiry into the consequences of bureaucratisation of profession has become one of the important considerations in the study of professions. With the changed work-ecology of professionals, both full-fledged professions and semi-professions have become organisation based. Thus, bureaucratisation and professionalisation both are inevitable processes for the organisational professionals. The present work is unique in respect of investigating the elements of bureaucratisation and professionalisation in varying organisational contexts in which librarians in Indian libraries perform their roles. This book explores the socio-economic background of librarians to examine the motivation for the choice of occupation and to study the career patterns. It investigates the role images, role-perceptions, role-relations and role-commitments of librarians and ascertains the extent of bureaucratisation and professionalisation in terms of some of their key characteristics. The findings of the study indicate that librarians face many constraints in the road towards professionalisation.
