Some 54 Titan II ICBM missiles were deactivated in America by 1987. Through a classified government program, another 54 were hidden in silos across Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, each manned by a highly paid crew of civilians. This took place long after the missiles were thought to have been removed.
This blockbuster military novel follows one of those crews in the path of an asteroid barreling towards Earth at 85,000 mph, threatening to wipe out humanity. The crater from impact would be over a mile deep.
