President Thomas Woodrow Wilson was moved by the conviction that he was the bearer of a mission entrusted to him by God to save humanity from the conflict of war. It happened in him as it happened in the tormented conscience of the prophet Elijah. Fleeing before the fury of Ahab, he despaired of his cause, was he not alone in fighting for the salvation of his people and for the honor of God! And now, in the turmoil of his soul, he is warned that God will pass by : in the impetuous wind that suddenly breaks out, image of the storms that upset mankind, Elijah does not find God; in the earthquake that shakes the foundations of the mountain, God does not appear; in the devouring fire, which destroys everything in its path, no divine presence; but here is a soft and subtle breath, hardly takes notice of this inspiration of sweetness, and God is there and, with Him, calm and peace returned. When then Elijah has recovered, he learns, oh surprise, that seven thousand men of his people have not bowed the knee to Baal, are with him and will work at his side in the holy cause of God.
