Nick Woodrow is studying several recently discovered artifacts, in and area of South Dakota, when through a strange mishap is is brought back to a time soon after the last Ice Age of North America. With just what he is wearing and carrying on himself, he is forced to learn to survive, in a primitive plains environment. Matters are made worse when he discovers a pack of giant black wolves, that in his time were extinct. In this time time they are alive and they have singled him out as a potential meal. Forced to use just the raw materials around him he must now defend himself and find his own food and shelter. As he is settling in to his new life, he discovers that he is not alone. Prehistoric man has also come to the area and he is drawn to their way of life, and discovering if what we know of them today, was how they really were thirty-thousand years ago. His main interest is a primitive woman that is the lone survivor from her own family. Together they share their knowledge and learn to work together to survive. He spends a long time trying to answer perplexing questions like; Do cave women have feelings? Do they communicate with others? Are they capable of love for someone, like he is feeling for her.?
