The Win

The Win is set in the Pacific Northwest, in Vancouver, British Columbia. The principal character, Kate, is a woman in her late thirties emerging from the chrysalis of an oppressive marriage into a mid-life career as a lawyer. In the time frame of the book, Kate discovers and grows from roots that include a birth mother who is Haida. "They say that a lawyer who represents herself has a fool for a client. I had handled my own divorce for nine months, and so far, had found this to be true." Kate's hopefully soon-to-be-ex husband Luke is on the brink of a discovery that could revolutionize the mining industry, but then he dies, suddenly. A lab accident? Maybe, but police officer Thorne can't help noticing that Kate is a lot better off - new look, new life, new men. When Luke's multi-million dollar winning lottery ticket turns up, Kate realizes she had better find new suspects, too, and fast. Lives are changed during the course of the investigation, as the chilling truth is revealed, layer by layer.
