In The Third Gender, McDanieladdresses the idea of the "third gender" inearly hagiography and Latin treatises onvirginity and then examines AElfric'streatment of gender in his translations ofLatin monastic Lives for his non-monasticaudiences. She first investigates patristicideas about a "third gender" by describingthis concept within the theoreticalframeworks of monasticism and then turnsto creating a historical and theologicalcultural context within which to locate aninterpretation of AElfric's portrayals of maleand female saints.
