Jesus told Sister Maria Pierina de Michaeli in 1936, "I wish that my Face, which reflects the intimate sorrow of my soul, and the suffering and love of my Heart, be better honored. He who contemplates me consoles me." Later, both Jesus and the Blessed Mother urged the good Sister to have the medal of Jesus' face based on the Shroud of Turin be made. She encountered many obstacles along the way including the lack of money and the devil's obvious attempts to stop it but miracles happened. Today it is the special visual centerpiece of a worldwide devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus.
The author cites what Jesus himself told many saintly people such as St Gertrude, and the "Little Flower" about the power of his image and reminds readers of the many passages in the Bible that direct believers "To seek the Face of God". He maintains that a visual image of Jesus and His "presence" are intricately linked together. When we seek the face of Jesus, the Son of God, we know he will be gracious to us and give us peace. What is more, the image of his holy face serves as a great protection against evil. It is hard to give into temptation when the face of Jesus is in your thoughts, imagination, physical sight or resting against your heart on a necklace or on a bracelet. It serves as a reminder of God's constant presence in our lives and the call to "Seek always the face of God"- Psalm 105:4.
