Epilepsy can be challenging to understand, especially for children. This book is to present it in a compassionate, relatable, and empowering way that will help them learn and empathize. This story was inspired by my handsome son, Christian. At the young age of 6 months, he was diagnosed with Epilepsy. It took a long time to figure out why he was so sick, including a very traumatic experience. Through it all he has been a fighter!
Never being formally educated on the illness, I wasn't prepared. But through research and groups, I familiarized myself so that he could have a comfortable life. I didn't understand how challenging it would be for others around. At first, Christian was a little shy due to having seizures at functions where kids would be scared. As his mom, I wanted to show him it was okay to be a little different. Building his confidence to walk proudly in his truth and make new friends. It wasn't until he was playing at a birthday party and had a seizure episode that kids asked questions. It hit me that not many people understand what happens, especially kids.
We came up with, "My brain is like a lightning storm and sometimes sends too many sparkles at once." This seemed to not only explain what was happening but also make kids understand simply.
