Interracial marriages? Accepted? Frowned on? Hated? Loved?

In 1975 Buddy Anderson, a ten year old white boy, and Brandy Wilcox, a ten year old black girl, understood skin color made people hate each other. But when they are forced to to depend on each other in order to stay alive skin color is forgotten.

After the death of his grandmother Buddy is put under the care of an old black woman living in the Projects. Brandy lives next door. Buddy only stays in the Projects for one day. When a man is killed Buddy and Brandy run away. They become the best of friends and end up getting married in the future and having a son. The story alters from the past to the future.

When the story lands on Noah Anderson, Buddy and Brandy's son, the tone changes from hopeful and triumph to mean and soulless. Noah is a hateful, selfish, person who despises everything his parents stands for. When Buddy is shot Noah's mother calls him home to make peace with his father before he dies.

The story goes back into the past. Buddy and Brandy are on the run. They end up hiding in the back of a semi truck. They are caught by a kind trucker who decides to take them to Florida with him.

Book 1 ends with Buddy and Brandy running into the unknown and their son deciding if he's going to walk away filled with hate or love. Will Noah's hate for his parents bring him peace or will he learn of his parents past and find the truth?
