During the segregation era, American Beach was a popular beach for African Americans on the east coast of Florida. Today, like other African American coastal communities, American Beach is in danger of disappearing.
The community, listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, is the northernmost site of 141 sites on the Florida Black Heritage Trail.
