"The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida" by Shehan Karunatilaka won the Booker Prize in 2022 and is a surreal, energetic and wild novel about the civil war in Sri Lanka in 1990.
Maali Almeida is a war photographer, gambler and secretly gay. He wakes up in what looks like a celestial visa office and in the serene Beira Lake his dismembered body is sinking. Maali has no clue about who and why he was killed. In a time of death squads, suicide bombs and assassins it can be anybody. And with the endless hordes of desperate ghouls and ghosts it looks like and impossible task to find out. But Maali is in a hurry.
