A colonial American doctor, Marshall Vore, has spent the better part of the last decade running from his past, and with good reason. Unable to live any longer bearing the weight of soul-grinding guilt, Marshall returns to Arcadia to finally accept the punishment due him at the hands of the one he has most sinned against. Through his journey, Marshall weighs the significance of repentance through the eyes of the one woman with the least reason to forgive him. All the while, Rosalee has suffered too. The doctor's unexpected return to Arcadia burns her life to the ground for a second time, and yet her survival, and the survival of those dearest to her, rest on this doctor so crushed by his own guilt that he no longer cares if he lives or dies. Rosalee must decide whether she can truly forgive in order to stay one step ahead of those that would destroy each of them. In their journey together, Marshall and Rosalee find a reason to hope, a reason to love, and a reason for enduring faith.
