Miss Whitsett, a loudmouth stenographer with a custom of swearing, has a bad habit of getting under people's skin and a keen nose for bull. Her unique skills and perspective allow her, along with a drunk cop and an anal-retentive insurance agent, to be recruited to investigate a strange and mysterious murder in 1890s Philadelphia.While performing a follow up interview, Miss Whitsett uncovers some peculiar details surrounding an insurance claim for a routine "accidental" death. A man has died, and three young children are missing. The only problem is that the accused, the beguiling Dr. H.H. Holmes, is already in jail for insurance fraud and there are seemingly no victims or evidence of a worse crime that will keep him there. The investigators embark on their journey to find evidence of the doctor's bizarre crimes before he is released and able to disappear into the city and continue his crime spree. Her biggest challenge is discovering the full depraved and disgusting nature of the crimes.She uses her wit and annoying questions to unravel this peculiar case of Dr. H.H. Holmes, America's first serial killer. They unravel the mystery of the curious doctor and embark on a strange odyssey through the mythology of the brutal and dangerous American Midwest of the 1890s.
