The Nine Sisters of California

The line of peaks known as the Nine Sisters is a landscape of Native American legend. Despite the historic changes brought by the Spanish, there is evidence that the local mission of San Luis Obispo was established in awareness of the region's sacred geography. Even stranger, modern power plants seem to purposely disrupt an ancient plan involving cosmic energies. This volume of the Paths of the Western Sun series examines the symbolism that still pervades this landscape, and helps explain why California was really thought to be an island for centuries.
