The Last of the Jews? provides an interpretive study of Southern Jewry from the perspective of an American Jewish family over a period of nearly two centuries as a struggle for ethnic survival conflicts with a natural tendency toward assimilation. This depiction of the Mordecai family presents an intimate glance into the significant events in American History from a Southern viewpoint. The author uses primary archival sources and interviews with contemporary family members to analyze and describe currents in American society fostering assimilation and pinpoints vestiges of ethnic survival, in an attempt to discover the future of Judaism in the South. He also examines female education and interfaith relationships in the South.
