What happened in and around Knotty Pine, West Virginia late in the 19th century is a little-known story. Unlike violent acts in the Old West which have been popularized on America's big screens, this and most stories of serial crime remain local. There are no famous outlaws here, no world-class sleuths, no riveting courtroom scenes, nothing to rival the glamorized lives of men named Bonney, Cassidy, Hardin and Horn. There's only that common thread of twisted motive, which so often spawns evil deeds.
