David Lowe arrives in Rome to begin his research at an obscure Vatican Library that soon reveals itself to be as strange as its Custodians. He is thrust into a world where the myths and legends of his studies are all too real and the new colleagues he has may well have been part of them. Head of the Custodians, Marcus with his nocturnal habits and quick temper nonetheless encourages him to explore the history of the custodians under the guidance of Morris, his second who quickly takes David under his wing. The story begins nearly two thousand years ago with two legionaries in the dead city of Persopilis in ancient Parthia. The horrors they encounter change them and the Empire forever. The more he reads the more David is certain that there is more to his new friends and their work than he could have imagined
