Using the example of an immigrant family from Lithuania, Sinclair illustrated the disastrous effects of excessive U.S. capitalism dictated by profit-madness and corruption in the late 19th century. In his example, he described the exploitation of workers and the hygienic abuses in the slaughterhouses and canneries in Chicago's Union Stock Yards.
