John Ronald Reuel Tolkien(1892-1973) was anEnglish writer, poet, philologist, and academic.From 1925 to 1945, he was the Professor of theUniversity of Oxford. He was a close friend of C.S.Lewis. He was appointed a Commander of theOrder of the British Empire by Queen Elizabethin 1972.The great success of The Hobbit andThe Lord of the Rings led directly to a popularresurgence of the genre. This has causedTolkien to be popularly identified as the "fathe""of modern fantasy literature.
