London, 1685.

Griffith John, a fatherless Wrexham boy, has only made his way in life through the generosity of his "betters". Seeking his fortune, he becomes a student of law, in a world that punishes crime without exception or mercy. A world where men are hanged and women are burned at the stake with alarming regularity. A world where the presumption of innocence is regarded as a dangerous delusion.

At the very heart of this legal system sits a ferocious Welshman by the name of Judge George Jeffreys. He is a man who uphold the King's word, wielding his laws like a hammer. Jeffreys takes a liking to young Griff, and wishes to advance the career of a bright young man who reminds him so much of himself. Until, of course, the resemblance fades. For Griff now has his own way to make, and his own judgement to cast...
