Beskrivelse
Matt and Reva Moran, having uprooted their family when they moved from Massachusetts to Florida, buy an antebellum house with a storied past.
Their idyllic move, however, takes a sinister turn as Reva starts feeling increasingly unwelcome both in the town and within the walls of the 170-year-old house. Despite recent renovations and a feature on HGTV, the house seems to resist its modernization and the presence of its new occupants. Through remote work, Reva uncovers the house's hidden quirks and dark secrets, encountering ominous signs amid the property's many acres of mossy trees and murky ponds. She delves deeper into the town's history, learning of the Grimms' legacy intertwined with slavery, the crop-lien system, "turp camps," and Jim Crow laws.
As the novel unfolds, a reckoning looms for the injustices of the past, both within the house's walls and within Reva's own life as she struggles to maintain normalcy amid the chaos and turmoil of its history.
