The beginning of the new academic year at Merrion College, Oxford promises to be an eventful one for Professor Margaret Spence Eliot. Before it even starts, she is persuaded to be the patron of a newly formed snowdrop club, much to the annoyance of her husband.
Creating further difficulties in the relationship, celebrity academic and Maggie's ex-fiancé Joshua "Stone" Paley is appointed as Merrion's new Appleton Fellow. Poison pen letters accusing Paley of being a murderer are being sent to the college. Then two actual murders occur and Paley becomes the prime suspect. Maggie is convinced he is being framed, but her efforts to prove his innocence are complicated by an unexpected development in her professional life, the devastating death of a close friend, and her husband's increasing jealousy of Maggie's former lover.
