When new renters move in down the street, they try to intimidate Emmeline Pinski.

So she starts watching them, gathering evidence. Problem: she could get herself killed.

Emmeline's had "bad weather" in her head, ever since her soldier father's helicopter blew up. Her mother's so depressed she may lose her job. With troubles roiling her mind, Emmeline avoids her classmates-they seem shallow, including the new boy from across the street, who pesters her to be friends.

Her only confidante is a Pembroke Welsh corgi, William, who "helps" her keep a watch on what she calls the "House of Evil." However, her new neighbors prove more evil than she imagined. No help from the police-to investigate, they'd need solid evidence.

Emmeline decides to get that evidence herself. If she doesn't, who will?

But the new people don't like her poking into their affairs.

They don't like it a lot.
