Beskrivelse
The Galvin Girls: A Novel by Emily Schmidt is a work of historical fiction based on the lives of Anna, Mary, Helen, Theresa, and Bridie Galvin. One by one, these five sisters leave Listowel, Ireland, to live on "Silver Street"; each one hoping to achieve her particular version of the American Dream.
Just weeks before the 1929 stock market crash, we meet the Galvin sisters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When unexpected violence occurs only moments after her arrival, Bridie quickly realizes that America is not what it seems. Anna struggles with protecting and providing for her family as the matriarch, while Mary desires to start her own life independent of her sisters. Helen makes several short-sighted decisions that affect more than just herself, Theresa takes on a secret new job that brings unexpected trouble, and Bridie tries to grow up faster than her sisters want. Together, they learn what it means to embrace America's fast pace and bright lights while staying true to their Irish homeland.
As one of America's darkest periods looms on the horizon, follow each of these sisters through her journey of hardship, surprise, betrayal, and ultimate success.
