"If gravity dictates that no family unit of any type will ever live anywhere but Earth, an age-old question will be answered. Humanity has no place in the universe and will forever more be represented by nothing more than billions of sentient beings on a tiny blue and white ball, endlessly bickering over water and dirt." For almost 100 years, it has been taken for granted that space travel would come some day. There has been another assumption embedded in that expectation; families would be a part of settling the "final frontier" in the same fashion as our ancestors. Unfortunately, our experiences in space are not supporting that notion. Anyone who lives in zero gravity for weeks or months experiences muscle atrophy, bone degeneration, vision problems, cardiology issues, and numerous other physical changes. Return to Earth gravity is difficult and dangerous. NASA has approached this problem with drugs and exercise and ignored (for 45+ years) the warnings of countless scientists and experts in physiology. Implementing artificial gravity was recommended repeatedly, but to no avail. Another issue is the lower gravity level of Mars which is 38% of that on Earth. No work has been done anywhere on Earth addressing the questions related to whether people can live in 0.38g. There is nothing to give us hope that children could be born and grow up on Mars, yet it is the only planet where we can go and expand the human species. This short book lays out the issues, discusses the status of work in this area, and offers a solution to finding out whether humanity has a future anywhere other than Earth.
