Major Jackey Gore, an expert in all sports but golf (and an astonishing braggart and social climber) bets his rival -- a golfing champion -- that he can learn the game in one week. They set a challenge match at a renowned Scottish course, the winner of which gains the right to propose to the (very rich) woman they both love.A hilarious week of inept training brings little improvement in our hero's game. When the ghost of an ancient Scottish cardinal offers him a set of enchanted, infallible clubs, his fortunes change, somewhat.
