Munshi Premchand, a pioneer of realist Hindi fiction as well as one of the most celebrated authors of the Indian sub-continent, lived and wrote during the British colonial period. He has written more than a dozen novels and two hundred fifty stories. Included in this collection are of some of his most famous stories which cover on a microcosmic level almost all the themes dealt in his entire ouvre. Premchand's stories recreate with great fidelity the life in the country side and small towns of India.
