Billionaire Donald Swearingen is grieving the recent death of his wife Mary Kate when he is summoned to the seaside estate of his neighbor and old friend Althea Wintergreen, who has a piece of shocking news for him: she believes that her son Jeffery was having an affair with Mary Kate and may have been the one who killed her. It's a tragic suspicion, and she desperately wants Don's help in finding out the truth.
Reluctantly, he agrees. Or perhaps not reluctantly...because everything is not as it seems. Soon, Don finds himself being pursued by an implacable police detective named Sebold, investigating an entirely different murder than the one he set out to solve, and discovering that there may be one or two skeletons in his friend Althea's family closet...matching the ones in his own.
