Beskrivelse

The Colonial Chronicles is an epic multi-series set of historical novels offering a panorama of characters and events of the North American Colonial Period chronicling the establishment of the Thirteen Original Colonies. Across a century and a half, the series opens with the loss of the Roanoke Colony in 1590, and concludes shortly after the establishment of the Georgia Colony in 1732. Part Eight continues after the initial years after the English Restoration, the return of the English Monarchy after years of Puritan rule by Oliver Cromwell. The Restoration of King James II to the throne, however, begins to present colonists with the need to adapt to unanticipated changes as the Crown reinstates Royal authority. The Navigation Acts are strengthened, limiting international trade to English ports, and global events also impede trade and business just as the Plascomb family moves in the direction of a shipping-focused business model. The Second Anglo-Dutch War also restricts trade, and the French entry into the war supporting the Dutch threatens the Plascomb sugar farm in the Caribbean. Plague strikes England, and the Great Fire of London the following year further intensifies trade restrictions, as well as daily life in London. Domestically, the English colonies are forced to make changes as the English take over New Netherland, creating the colony of New York. Connecticut is united into a single colony, and the new colonies of Carolina and New Jersey are formed nearly together. Trade is further disabled when Virginia places a restriction of growing tobacco due to falling prices, in an attempt to artificially drive-up prices for the product in the global market. Shifting Indian relations in several colonies also cause changes and adaptations, and the slave trade begins to evolve into an industry as multiple nations compete to gain a monopoly on human cargo, while the Great Hurricane of 1667 threatens to completely alter the Virginia landscape.
