Beskrivelse

The "Child's Vanishing Landscape" story book is about Birmingham's listed buildings. The stories written by the children, are about Birmingham's traditional historic buildings. The editing and compilation of the stories and putting together information for the book was done by Sue Cooke, Sue Fenoughty and Erica Pounce. The 26 stories come from the children, Carl Chinn, Peter Leather, the sponsors and teachers. Sir Adrian Cadbury, as a strong supporter of educational projects and with extensive historic links with Birmingham and its heritage kindly agreed to write the foreword for the book. Erica Pounce and Sue Fenoughty wrote the cross-curricular notes in the book which have an emphasis on history for teachers guidance on the National Curriculum. Throughout National Curriculum history pupils have to use buildings and sites as a historical source for finding out about the past in the different history study units. In writing and reading these stories pupils are helped to make sense of their present environment by looking at the past. The cross curricular themes of environmental education and citizenship are also being addressed as, through looking at the built environment in this way, pupils are encouraged to think for themselves on environmental issues and to know how they can take action for their environment in the future. The considerable Appendix at the back of the book lists interesting facts and storylines on nearly 200 other buildings in Birmingham.
