This book provides a much needed summary of the excavations atseveral important but poorly documented mound sites and nicelysynthesizes this data into a phase-by-phase history of chiefdomdevelopment in the Chattahoochee Valley. At the same time, theauthors present a provocative model for the development and spread ofMississippian societies through the Southeast. Along the banks of thelower Chattahoochee River, the remains of ancient settlements areabundant, including archaeological sites produced by Native Americansbetween 900 and 350 years ago, and marked by the presence of largeearthen mounds.
