With only months to live, and haunted by the ghost of a man long dead, Wilhelmina Carpenter is determined to find out who she really is.
Preparations for America's Bicentennial celebration are in full swing, but Wilhelmina has no time for the patriotic fervor sweeping the country. Already struggling with a devastating diagnosis, the startling results of a blood test challenges her very identity. She soon discovers that she is not the biological daughter of kind and eccentric parents, but was found by them as an abandoned baby in the summer of 1927.
Gideon, the ghost of an enslaved man brutally killed in the waning days of the Civil War, has visited Wilhelmina's dreams for over twenty years. Threads of his story weave through hers in strange and unexpected ways, and he follows her through the decades in his own quest for answers.
Driven by their combined resolve, Wilhelmina delves into the past where a disparate group of women joined forces to save her as a newborn. In the present, another group forms to help realize her dying wish.
