Albert Einstein realized his General Theory of Relativity-the foundation underlying our contemporary theory of gravity - only because it had been given a mathematical form by Emmy Noether. It is equally revealing as her physics is Noether's life story, which reminds us in the most dramatic way imaginable of the extent to which sexual prejudice was embedded into science, and how it prevented one of greatest minds in twentieth-century history from working on equal terms with men. Her personality and optimistic spirit- which Wanda Editz unveils so assiduously in this biography book allowed was for a very special genius to not just carry on, but to arrive at insight that continues today as breathtaking.
