Skylark always knew she'd escape her refugee camp someday, though she never thought her ticket out would be an internship gig with the world's only trillionaire. But when a terrorist attack sends their crippled starship hurtling into deep space, her only chance is to dive into the Ancestor Machine-a perfect simulation of the Earth, circa 2042-and find a way to get back home before she dies of old age.

Her brother Blakey has simpler ambitions: join the Air Corps, fly a dogfighter, and finish the war those terrorists started. Nobody knows who they are or what they want, but he's too Numb to care much anyway. He just knows they killed his sister, and that's enough for him.
