As a key liberation leader in exile, Mbeki was instrumental inhis party's anti-apartheid struggle. During the South Africantransition, he helped build one of the world's most respectedconstitutional democracies. As president, despite somesuccesses, he was unable to overcome South Africa's inheritedsocioeconomic challenges, and his disastrous AIDS policieswill remain a major blotch in his legacy.
