A Study of German Hymns in Current English Hymnals

A detailed study is made of the 34 most popular German hymns found in 36 current English hymnals. The hymnals span a wide range of Christian affiliations, and the hymns range from Reformation times to the 19th century. The texts of the translations are compared with the originals, and the theological and linguistic implications of the many variant readings are explored. Biographies of the translators from the 18th to the 20th century and parallel texts of the hymns with their variants are supplied. Full indexes and documentation are provided.
